A Winter Wonderland walk today - with snow! - for 21 Severnside Ramblers on this little 3.5 mile bimble from Oldbury, along the Severn Way to the power station, with a return along Ham lane, passing the 'Toot', before retreating to the warmth of the Anchor Inn for an excellent Christmas lunch. Great to have such a large turnout with 40 attending the lunch. Many thanks to all for coming out today to make this such a memorable day, to Gill King for organising the event, and to the staff of The Anchor Inn - Oldbury On Severn for the fine catering. A rather chilly day in the Forest of Dean for 15 Severnside Ramblers, and dull with a touch of heavy mist (well, light drizzle ok!) but not enough to dampen the spirits of our intrepid group who enjoyed this 8.5 mile circuit from Parkend taking in Mallards Pike, New Fancy View (what a wonderful name) and the southern end of Cannop Ponds, which was our lunch stop. A 'select' few adjourned to the cafe at Whitemead Park 'après-walk' for a very welcome hot chocolate (well, that was my choice anyway). Many thanks to Chris Bracey for leading today. Andy P.

A big day for Severnside Ramblers. Our 25th anniversary AGM (exciting!?). Sunny weather for a short 3.5m walk beforehand led by Jean Aellen - many thanks Jean - followed by an excellent buffet lunch (all the more members to attract!) in Tytherington village hall. Our illustrious chairman, Ken Mill, provided a super surprise anniversary cake (no he didn't make it himself, but it was a family affair). Plenty of discussion in the AGM and all the important officer roles filled. A fine day all round - even the weather held out, until 5 minutes after completing the walk - at which point the heavens opened! Many thanks to all the members who pulled out the stops to provide the refreshments - hot soup, 'ploughmans', tea/coffee and some wine, all topped off by that brilliant cake. Quite a day - a few photos to remember it by. Andy P.

A glorious 'spring' day for today's Severnside Ramblers walk. 15 members (new and old!) followed this 7 mile route from Norton Malreward (what a wonderful name), taking in stretches of the Community Forest Path, through East Dundry and along the ridge overlooking Bristol - a clear day gave us superb views across to the two Severn bridges and east to Lansdown above Bath (one of these photos shows a building on the race course). The 2 minute silence was observed shortly after the start, and just before our coffee break. Later on lunch was enjoyed gazing at those views across Bristol. A most interesting Friday Amble yesterday for 23(!) Severnside Ramblers (ok - we had several new walkers with us, but we live in hope!) in this little explored area on the 'other side' of the Severn. Mathern is just a few miles south-west of Chepstow, but very close to us on this side of the river - as long as the old Severn bridge is open? We explored the area in dull but mild conditions with very little mud underfoot. Our leader Heather Rickards gave a very informative narration on the history of the area, as can be seen from the photos of the bilingual information boards. Many of the group adjourned to the Miller's Arms for lunch after the walk. Being 11th November we held the 2-minute silence on the sea defences at 11am, followed by a coffee break. Today could be called a day of two halves for 10 Severnside Ramblers. Walking from Tresham on a 9+ mile route, we started in mist, but it was dry; then the rain kicked in just after coffee break - and it soaked us! Then just as we reached Alderley for lunch in the churchyard, out came the sun! It stayed like that for the rest of the day, so most of these 57 photos were taken early or after lunch. And what a treat near the end with up to 6 Red Kite wheeling above us - magic! Many thanks to Sue Lancaster for leading today. Andy P.

An occasionally damp walk today for 7 Severnside Ramblers on a lovely 8.5 mile walk on the western slopes of the Wye Valley above Tintern. We were joined by two members of the Ross-on-Wye group who were a very welcome addition to bring our numbers up to 9 - it's great to meet members of other groups and Jane and Jas's company was much appreciated - welcome ladies! Our walk started dry, and ended dry - which was nice, some 'dampness' in between, but still a most enjoyable walk. We were even treated to a rainbow (well, a bit of one!) - so, all in all, a fine day's walking. Many thanks to our leader Chris Bracey. Andy P.

A glorious long weekend in The Elan Valley, at the Elan Valley Lodge, for a 25 strong group of Severnside Ramblers who were joined by several others from our neighbouring Clevedon group. The poor forecast was, as usual, very pessimistic - we had some light rain on Saturday but fine and dry the rest of the time with clear views across the hills and reservoirs. An excellent choice of walks each day from our two illustrious leaders - many thanks to Steve and Tudor for leading the most entertaining walk'n'talk routes for us. The accommodation was excellent - we certainly didn't go hungry! and the tea & coffee flowed freely. It was a particular pleasure to share time with some of our fellow ramblers from Clevedon - thanks very much for your company guys'n'gals... The rather large collection of photos/videos below (350) is a reflection of the quality of the walks and weather we experienced - a 'target rich environment' as the saying goes. Many thanks to Gill King for your organisational skills, Heather Rickard, Christine Turner and Jill Parkinson for the evening entertainment, Steve and Tudor for your quality leadership, and all the staff at The Elan Valley Lodge - it was a brilliant weekend. You'll need a comfy chair and a long drink if you're going to work through all the photos. Andy P

The moral from today's Severnside Ramblers walk could be 'Treat weather forecasts as not being gospel' if you avoided joining us today because of what was said last night! (although the closed Severn bridge could have had something to do with it too). Wonderful weather for this 8 miler by Chris Bracey for just 3 of us (plus guest Amber the dog). The route took us from the library car park in Lydney in a circular tour taking in Taurus Crafts & Ayleburton, across fields to the bank of the Severn, then East to Lydney Harbour (lunch stop). We took a turn North to pass Nass Court and Lydney Golf Club for the return to the car. All this topped off with tea & cake at our leader's home (yes, Amber got a treat too). A very pleasant 4 mile Friday Amble today for 24 Severnside Ramblers around the Rangeworthy area on a pretty flat route (total ascent 45 feet) but interesting none the less with some attractive cottages & 'mansions' including the sadly long-closed Rangeworthy Court, being a 'snip' at under £500,000 - any takers? All this topped off by an excellent lunch at The Rose & Crown. Many thanks to Jean Aellen for leading this huge crowd around, and the staff of The Rose & Crown for the catering. Just the three of us Severnside Ramblers out today, but a very pleasant day for this 8 mile walk in Kendleshire/Westerleigh. After parking at Bitterwell lake we looped north via the Dram Way to Ram Hill, then east over fields to Westerleigh, where we stopped for coffee break. We returned west towards our start point then swung south to cross Kendleshire golf course where we just had to stop for tea at the 19th Tee! Our second loop took in Winterbourne Down along a stretch of the Frome Valley Way. A most enjoyable route with fine views south across Bristol, and east all the way to Freezing Hill on the Cotswolds - many thanks to Joy for leading this small, but happy band. Andy P.

A surprisingly tough, but very enjoyable, 7.5 miles today for twelve Severnside Ramblers from Lower Redbrook, on the Wye. A steep climb to the West of the river, then a swing North to Pen-twyn and on round Church Hill Common on an undulating(!) route before a welcome steady descent to the start, for drinks at the wonderfully located Boat Inn on the West bank of the Wye. Many thanks to Dan for his inaugural walk as leader for the group - nice one Dan - we look forward to more where that came from! A hot dry day with just a gentle breeze and frequent, very welcome, tree cover to cool things down a bit - just a bit! - Andy P.

31 July - Tidenham Tunnel walk led by Claire Cox, photos taken by Andy Pearson.
Quite a tough 10 mile walk today for 14 Severnside Ramblers in the Tutshill area of Chepstow. The route took in stretches of Offa's Dyke Path, Woodcroft and the recently opened ex-railway 'Tidenham Tunnel' which has very subdued lighting due to the resident bat population (some InfraRed pictures here, just because - the only way to take pictures in there - ish!). We had one seriously steep climb on this route, but just a couple of stiles and some great views across the Severn and to Chepstow Castle. It was good to be joined by several members of other Ramblers groups - Cardiff, Brunel and Forest-of-Dean - thanks for your company fellow ramblers - and many thanks to Claire Cox for leading on this very warm day which turned just a little damp around lunch time! Andy P.

Probably one of the best places to start a walk for many miles around! 'Leaf & Ground' on the B4066 in Cam, on the way to Dursley. Twelve Severnside Ramblers gathered in the car park and we treated ourselves to coffee/tea etc before striking out up the, quite steep, hill to come out on the plateau of Stinchcombe Hill, with its Golf course. A good 'circumnavigation' followed taking in all the views in the slightly misty conditions. A very pleasant walk of 4 miles with plenty of chat - all topped off by drinks/lunch back at the cafe sat outside under the parasoles - just in case of rain? A dry day with just a splash of drizzle at the end, but not enough to don waterproofs. Many thanks to Allan D. for leading and Leaf & Ground for the excellent catering - and did I mention the Deli shop - we did our bit for their profits!.. Andy P.

From Compton Dando to Keynsham and closely following the River Chew with a little mud, a little rain, but plenty of sun and lots of attractive cottages and grand houses - and did I mention the river? - plenty of that too, as can be seen from the photos. Photos from today's day by the seaside, our coach trip to The Mumbles. An 11 mile route from Bracelet Bay heading west to Pwlldu Bay via Langland Bay, Caswell Bay and Brandy Cove. A huge turn out of 24 Severnside Ramblers today for this most pleasant 4.7 mile Friday Amble from The Ship (Alveston). The route took us in a picturesque loop with fine views East to the Cotswolds; then, after passing a Donkey Sanctuary and crossing the A38, came views across undulating fields of wheat towards the Severn in the West. We returned to the pub for lunch via Greenhill Lane - a steady climb on an ancient drover's road - up to Alveston village. Many thanks to Bob for leading today. Andy P.

A cooler and duller day today for our happy band of 8 Severnside Ramblers who still enjoyed this 8+ mile walk from Tresham, taking in Ozleworth Park, Bagpath and stretches of The Monarch's Way. Beautiful undulating countryside and lots of Cotswold Stone structures. And did I mention the views? - all the way to the Brecon Beacons with the first Severn Bridge in between. Maybe it was a 'double whammy' today of bank holiday combined with, let's call it, poor weather that brought a minimal turnout of 5 Severnside Ramblers, including our leader, Chris Bracey (many thanks Chris), for this 9 mile walk from the Lansdown Park'n'Ride. The route took in the race course, Prospect Stile, Kelston Round Hill and Weston via some good stretches of The Cotswold Way. This walk would have included many wonderful views, but the light rain and misty conditions rather put paid to these. The photos give a good impression of how much we could see - somewhere in these are the two Severn Bridges, Clifton suspension bridge, and even Westbury White Horse - all of which we saw when walking this route late last year. A great day's walking all the same, during which we bumped into an American couple who are over here for several months and were on the last day of walking the whole Cotswold Way. Andy P.

Another winner of a walk from leader Claire Cox today for 11 Severnside Ramblers on the east side of the Arlingham Peninsula. Just under 8 miles from the edge of Saul, taking in the Stroudwater Navigation (NOT canal!) and the River Frome (yes, another one), and including several 'Green Stop Line' Pill boxes, Fromebridge Mill (nice spot for a pub meal), Saul Junction, and touching on the Severn at Upper Framilode. A fascinating tour of this area with lots of history and wildlife on show - as proved by the photo count today! Many thanks to Claire for this brilliantly planned route. Andy P

An interesting day of weather today for Severnside Ramblers' Lydney walk - it threw chilly gale, warm sun, and some quite wet rain (mostly for the last 20 minutes!) at us for this 5+ mile walk. The small turnout (3) led us to start from the leader's house rather than the Taurus Craft centre as planned but still a walk full of industrial archaeology, pleasant gardens and civilised paths (ie. no mud!), and boats & trains a-plenty. Many thanks to Chris B. for leading. A fair crop of photos resulted - that's a chiff-chaff in the tree, we seemed to be accompanied by these little birds all along the route! Andy P.

Sharpness and the canal to Purton and its 'hulks' followed by a clockwise route back, uphill and over fields with grand views of the Forest of Dean, Cotswolds, Malverns and (surprise, surprise) May Hill! Well, we didn't feel at all foolish today! going out to join this lovely 'Friday Amble' by Severnside Ramblers member Bob. 15 walkers enjoyed great views across the Wye and as far as the Cotswolds with Freezing Hill and Kelston Round Hill in sight - plus both Severn bridges. It was cold but with plenty of sunshine to warm us now & then (in the sun & out of the wind was like summer). A glorious day for this 7.5 mile walk by 10 Severnside Ramblers from Berkeley, taking in fine views of the castle and, later from the height of the deer park, the wide panoramas across the Severn to the west, and over to the Cotswolds (seeing the Tyndale monument) to the east.
